Introduction

When people hear the phrase, “reinvent yourself”, they most likely think that it means, “change who you are”. While this is one possible meaning of that phrase, it is not the only meaning. Reinventing oneself is simply a way of discovering your identity and the various characteristics that contribute. The people one meets and the experiences one goes through will contribute to the development of one’s identity. In other words, one “reinvents oneself” according to these various aspects of life they experience which will impact his or her identity. These experiences with the people one meets and the places one has been will help one impact the world oneself. No one explores this concept of self-reinvention better than Charles Bukowski. I will look at how Bukowski examines self-reinvention in two different ways in his poems “No Leaders, Please” and “The Bluebird”.
