Introduction

We all make friends in life who help contribute to our identities, and we may see these friends or significant others often; however, there are those points in their lives in which they are separated from their friends or significant others. What happens after we are separated from them for so long? In life, there are two possibilities of what can happen when two people see each other after being separated for so long: one possibility is that those feelings of companionship will still be there after being separated for so long, and the other possibility is that distance changes the two people after so long, and the two people are not as close as they used to be. This leaves people to wonder if they even knew who their friend or significant other was in the beginning. One of the biggest indicators of true friendship is how well one got to know that person, and if that person really made enough of an impact for that friendship to continue. In this entry, I talk about two pieces of literature that show two very different portrayals of what is lost after being gone for so long: the short story “Shiloh” and the film Cast Away.
